Obituary for Margaret Smith

Margaret Jared Simmons Smith passed from this life into the arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, September 17, 2019. Margaret celebrated her 100th birthday in April at her home in Kelso with family and friends. Born and raised in Lincoln County, Tennessee, she was a lifelong member of the Kelso Cumberland Presbyterian Church where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday School and participated in all events concerning the church and community. She could always be counted on the provide comfort and support to her family and friends. She particularly loved hosting dinners with plenty of food and homemade ice cream.

In 1937 she married Warner Simmons and they became parents to Sandy Newby who lives in Huntsville, Alabama; Lana Simms who lives in Fayetteville, Tennessee with her husband Ed; and Sherrill Ann who passed away in early childhood. Mr. Simmons passed away in 1975, and in 1981 she married Dillon Smith who passed away in 2007.

In addition to the above, she was preceded in death by grandson Ronny Newby; parents H.D. and Betty Jared; brothers Billy, David, Don and Clay Jared; sisters Mary Agnes Bradley and Jo Ellen Hamilton.

Survivors in addition to her daughters are sister, Linda Burroughs of Huntsville, Alabama; grandchildren, Mark Newby and wife Susan of Mobile, Alabama; Becky Linsz and husband Mark of Charlotte, North Carolina; Matt Simms and wife Allison of Nashville, Tennessee; Rob Simms and wife Shayna of Fayetteville, Tennessee; Sara Stephens and husband John of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; and great grandchildren, Belle, Jane and Sarah Newby; Ashley, Anna and Ellie Linsz; Ellie, Cole, Ayden, and Cullen Simms; Caroline, Carter and Cade Stephens; stepchildren, Mary Martin and husband Mike of Hermitage, Tennessee; Jim Taylor and wife Jill; Ginny Thompson and husband Bradley, and children, Kaylee and Bodey, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family would like to thank her many devoted caregivers: Jackie Street, Anita Seifert, Shirley Trahin, Christie Groce, Sherry Arnold, Judy Martin, Christine Amason, Melissa Gray, Lisa Land, Sara Honea, Casi Tanner, Nancy Cottrell, Avalon Hospice and Dr. William Hughes.

Memorials may be made to the Kelso Cumberland Presbyterian Church, 16 Teal Hollow Road, Kelso, TN 37348 or Kelso Cemetery Fund, 51 Champ Road, Kelso, TN 37348.

Visitation will be from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 20, 2019 at the Kelso Cumberland Presbyterian Church with the service at 11:00 a.m.
