Obituary for Rebecca C. Raby

Rebecca (Becky) C. Raby, age 87, passed away on Wednesday (March 18, 2020) after a brief illness. Becky rejoined her best friend, soul mate, and husband of 69 years, Joe, who preceded her in death February 3, 2020. Born June 18, 1932 in Fayetteville, Becky was the daughter of the late Bertha (Pickett) and Massey Cunningham.

Joe and Becky began their life together after meeting at the local grocery, eloping Sept. 27, 1950, immediately preceding Joe’s deployment to the Korean Conflict. From their first meeting and until his recent death, they spent every day together, side-by-side and holding hands. Becky was proudest of her roles as a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She enjoyed playing jokes on her family, insisting to her children that they would own England’s Raby Castle once they paid the back taxes, playing April 1st pranks, and filling each day with laughter. Aside from her family, her passions were genealogy, finding four leaf clovers, crafting, her Yorkshire Terrier (Amy), her church, interacting with children, and the love of her life, Joe.

Becky is survived by her children, Patricia (Clay) Williams of Memphis, Stephen (Tina) Raby of Indialantic, Fla., and David (Pam) Raby of Nolensville; her seven grandsons, Adam (Joleen) Raby, Bryan (Camille) Raby, Patrick (Kerry) Williams, Andrew (Lindsay) Williams, Matthew (Amber) Raby, Joseph Raby and Tyler Raby; two great-grandsons, Jake Raby and Hamilton Raby; and her great-granddaughter, Aleigha Raby. Becky is preceded in death by her parents, sisters (Wilma Cunningham, Edna Blasingame, and Wanda Smith) and her beloved husband, Joe. Though she will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts, we know she and Joe are together again, side-by-side and holding hands.

Because of COVID-19, there will be no visitation. A private funeral service will be held Friday, March 20, 2020 with the Rev. Ann Hatcher officiating. Becky will be buried in Rose Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Becky’s memory to the First United Methodist Church, 200 Elk Ave. N, Fayetteville, TN 37334. The family would like to thank the caring staff of Traditions of Smyrna Assisted Center for their loving care and support and for embracing Becky and her family as their own during her short stay with them. Gallant-Riverview Funeral Home is honored to serve the family.
